LIKE A VIRGIN ALBUM

Often overlooked and under-appreciated among fans, Madonna's second album, "Like A Virgin" catapulted her to stardom and was so popular it was selling an astonishing 80,000 copies a day in 1984.  Due to his success with David Bowie's album a couple of years prior, Nile Rodgers of Chic was chosen as the album's producer.  This was before Madonna took control of her career- her record company was simply not ready to hand over creative control to her just yet.

"Like A Virgin" is somewhat similar in style and sound as her debut effort, but this time Madonna and Nile Rodgers incorporated some New Wave into the mix.  It worked.  The album  spawned 5 top 5 smashes (including her first #1 single, "Like A Virgin") and was her first #1 album in the US, which would eventually go on to sell over 21 million copies worldwide.  Today, it's one of the best-selling albums of all time.  The album was one of the first to use digital recording, and Rodgers persuaded two of Chic's original band members to play on the album.  Besides the massively successful title track and the infectious, Betty Boop-ness of "Material Girl", the album honestly doesn't have a dull moment to be found anywhere.  Madonna urgently sings these songs with passion and determination, and it makes sense that this album made her a superstar.
Nowhere near as weak as it's usually made out to be, "Like A Virgin" is an album that I'm proud to say has completely grown on me.  I've truly come to appreciate it in the last few years, and with it being digitally re-mastered, it sounds incredible.  When you look back at the 80's, there were many memorable singles, but besides Michael Jackson, very few artists actually made memorable albums.  Madonna did this extremely well.  So when is the last time you've actually listened to the entire album?  Give it a whirl... you might be surprised.
